Nasutitermes graveolus M19
Description

Nasutitermes graveolus are nasute termites nesting on trees. We saw many of these nests on the hills behind Cairns, and on the Atherton plateau, in Queensland, Australia.

We could recognise the nests of Nasutitermes graveolus and distinguish them from those of Nasutitermes walkeri (another common arboreal nesting Nasutitermes species) as the nests tend to be smaller, with an ovoidal or semi-circular shape, and they were often built on top of tree junctions or flat branches of the tree (while N. walkeri nests often surrounded the entire branch on all sides).

The soldiers of N. graveolus can be visually recognised because of their relatively dark head.
